Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and Dr. Alveda King, its Director of African American Outreach, today issued statements in favor of H.R. 3541, the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA). The measure, the subject of a House subcommittee hearing this afternoon on Capitol Hill, would outlaw any abortion performed because of the race or sex of a baby.
“We know from census figures that sex selection abortions do happen in the United States,” said Fr. Pavone. “We also know because we minister to those who have had them. The abortion industry enables and facilitates discrimination against girls in the womb. The Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act is urgently needed to stop the blatant and barbaric killing of babies because of their sex.”
“There’s still a place in America where people can be killed because of their race and the perpetrators go free. It’s the abortion clinic,” added Dr. King. “The minority baby whose mother listens to an abortionist who masks his racism in false compassion can be denied his life and liberty simply because of his skin color. This outrageous racism should be illegal. When Congressman Franks’ legislation is passed it will be.”
In addition to criminal penalties for the abortionist who performs a sex or race selection abortion, H.R. 3541 would establish civil remedies for the mother, father, and maternal grandparents of the victimized unborn child. The bill would also make it illegal to solicit or accept money for the performance of such discriminatory procedures.
